Magazine Design Pt 1
My most recent assignment is to design a magazine of my choosing. So far, it has been a difficult process. So much thought goes into it: the headline, the picture (Am I going to use a web picture or should I take a picture of a friend? Who am I going to use for my cover?), the articles, the type, the positioning, what the magazine is going to be about, who my readers are going to be, how to attract readers to buy the magazine, etc. If my magazine was on a news stand, then it needs to be so well-designed and attractive that the viewer doesn’t see any magazine but my own. Considering all of this, it’s hard to design something that you know so little information about or have little experience with. It’s also difficult to design something when you have the freedom to choose from anything your imagination can create.
So, I began to refer to professional magazine cover design pieces. I gathered some interesting covers through Wired, Blender, and DG. I also found some interesting sites that tell you exactly what type of info should be placed on the magazine cover (see MagForum). In addition, I found an interesting tutorial on making a magazine cover in Indesign from Layers Magazine, which boosted my confidence level and taught me some new tricks.
Stay tuned for my finished pieces!
